Tagged: I read this book and it broke my heart, Seriously, I can't imagine having something so life-altering as cancer, and then meeting someone who makes it all that little bit more bearable, and then falling in love with them, and then having them ripped away from me, As it is I cried at the thought of my SO dying, because like Augustus says: cancer and its side effects are mortifying, And you know what the best and worst thing about this book is?, That it continues after the death, It's not like An Imperial Afflication where it just suddenly stops - because in some ways, that's a kindness, The result of that is a jolting shock and the understanding that people just die and it's not convenient, The way that John Green ended TFIOS makes it worse for the reader because we get a glimpse of the wasteland that is left after 'the battle', I think in some ways the reader is supposed to fall a little bit in love with Augustus Waters, The first person narration from Hazel Lancaster's perspective helps with that - it gives us an insight into why Hazel likes him and why we s, But frankly I didn't fall in love with Augustus Waters, I think he's 'self-aggrandising' and more than a little bit pretentious, and that's if we ignore the fact that the middle-aged John Green's words are coming out of a seventeen year old mouth, If we see it that way it's not so bad - I can accept it., The point is that I didn't lose Augustus Waters the way Hazel Lancaster does;, In my mind - in my imagination - I lost my boyfriend, That is what broke my heart about this book, The existentialist discussion is interesting and the take on cancer suffering is fresh on every level, It's not a romantic portrayal, There is piss and vomit and death and alcoholism, and that is what made it so easy for me to apply at least some of the situation in the book to my own world, Luckily - o so luckily - my boyfriend is not dying: he does not have cancer: he is not waiting for the executionor's axe, and I don't have to wonder which day is going to be his last, But the thought that one day - If I'm lucky enough to grow old with him - I might think these things, .
